Best ASX Dividend Stocks for Reliable Passive Income

Independent Falkon Analytics research on investing for retirement income.

A retirement portfolio has one job above all others: pay a dependable income without forcing the owner to sell assets at a bad time. That pushes the screen toward companies with durable cash flows, conservative balance sheets and a long record of paying — and ideally growing — fully franked dividends.

What we screen for

We start with dividend history through at least one downturn, then look at payout ratios (too high leaves no buffer), net debt to earnings, and whether the business has genuine pricing power. Franking matters more than most investors realise: for a retiree on a zero tax rate the credits are refunded in cash, turning a 5% yield into closer to 7%.

Where the reliable income is

The big banks remain the backbone of most Australian income portfolios, though we prefer to size them carefully given how concentrated the sector is. Beyond them we like the regulated infrastructure owners, the large supermarket operator, and a handful of listed investment companies that smooth their distributions across cycles.

What to avoid

The highest yields on the screen are usually a warning, not an opportunity — the market is pricing in a cut. We also steer retirees away from single-commodity miners as core holdings; the dividends are real but they swing with the commodity price, which is exactly the volatility a retirement income stream is supposed to avoid.
